What’s Your Vision?
An often-quoted passage from the Bible is Proverbs 29:18 which says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Certainly, when the future is uncertain and there is no clear direction, we can find ourselves down and out, even depressed. Vision is the fuel for how we invest our time and what decisions we make about the future and how we spend our days and hours moving toward it. But what do we do if we don’t have a vision?
Having thought about this a lot myself, I’ve realized that one way to catch a vision is to use one of those Venn diagrams we might have seen in school. In one circle list the things that you value (family, health, faith, community) and in the other the things you enjoy (food, outdoors, golf, music). Where these things overlap might be where your vision lies for the future. I put a high value on my family, and I love the outdoors. Over the years our vision of camping together has taken more shape and become one of our favorite ways to be together.
At times though, even this exercise has gotten me down as I catch a vision for something and wish I’d done it years ago! Well, as C.S. Lewis once said, “You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” As a child, I would watch Little House on the Prairie, and as parents, we read the books to our kids when they were little. I was surprised to find out recently that Laura Ingalls Wilder didn’t write her first book until she was 65! One well-known actor, Michael Caine, having written some non-fiction books over the years, released his first fiction work at age 90! There are plenty of stories like these, but a life-giving vision could be as simple as seeing your value for community and love for coffee result in a weekly meet-up with people who enjoy the same. We are all unique, in countless ways, so it makes good sense that our visions should be a unique blend of the things we value and enjoy.
