Bucket Lists
You may recall the 2007 movie, The Bucket List, which starred Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The plot of the movie follows two unlikely companions both of which have just received a terminal medical diagnosis. The film chronicles their globetrotting escapades to check off a list of items they each wanted to do with however many days they had left. Interestingly, the writer of this screenplay was one of the first people to coin the term “Bucket List” and actually had “get a film made at a major studio” on his list!
Personally, I’ve always been a little turned off by the idea of a Bucket List. Maybe it is facing the brevity of life or not wanting extensive travel which is often what makes these sorts of lists. Whatever the reason, I’d never done it.
That is, until I read a book called the Bucket List Blueprint. What struck me about this book is the way the author presented the idea more as a “tangible life plan” rather than a list of far-off locations to visit. And he presented the components of a Bucket List as being much more than what I’d considered before. He created the MYBUCKETLIST acrostic to explain his approach:
• M: Meet a personal hero
• Y: Your proud achievements
• B: Buy that special something
• U: Ultimate challenges
• C: Conquer a fear
• K: Kind acts for others
• E: Express yourself
• T: Take lessons
• L: Leave a legacy
• I: Idiotic stuff
• S: Satisfy a curiosity
• T: Travel adventures
What this book reminded me of is that a list of goals, whatever you call it, should be a reflection of what I most value in life. My list shouldn’t be about what other people want to do, but what I’m most interested in and passionate about doing. I also appreciated the added dimensions of goals like “kind acts for others” and “conquer a fear.” To make these lists more real, the author encourages us to share them with others.
Every season of life presents us with new challenges and opportunities. Maybe the warmer weather and longer days will inspire to you move toward one of your long-held goals or reveal a new endeavor you’d love to conquer. Whatever it might be, Go For It!
