I Love Financial Planning: Love Letters #1

With Valentine’s Day squarely in the middle of this month. I’m writing about the things I love about my work.  The first is Financial Planning.

Nick Murray said, “Money is Love.”

Those two words, Money and Love, conjure all sorts of thoughts, feelings, and emotions.  When joined together and saying each equals the other, I find the statement to be the best way to simply capture the heart of financial planning.

What am I expressing when I sacrifice whatever short-term pleasure to make monthly payments on a life insurance policy?  When I fund a 529 plan for my kids anticipating the education expenses in their futures, what motivates me?  As parents sacrifice a vacation or car upgrade to save and pay for a child’s wedding, what pushes them on?  During your working life as you make regular contributions to a retirement account so you and your spouse are provided for in the future and your kids don’t have to support you, what’s the force at work?  It’s love.

Money can be earned, spent, saved, and invested.  Beneath all of those is some expression of love.  When we create financial plans by identifying what is of greatest value in our lives and directing financial resources to protect and provide for those ends, we are acting out of love.

Money is Love.

I love financial planning because it combines the two things I’ve always enjoyed, people and numbers.  Only recently, have I realized that joining the two together is the thing we all need: Love.
